It is not uncommon to see the odd donkey or mule laden down with goods and walking along the village streets. The weather is hot and dry, with over 320 days of sunshine each year. Even in the winter months the daytime temperature is an average 12.c, with clear blue skies and sunshine most of the time. The night time temperature does drop considerably though, and that's when you curl up in front of your wood burner with a hot nightcap.
The area has a typical Spanish feel with whitewashed streets and wrought ironed windows. Benamaurel boasts a market held each Sunday where you can buy everything from a red pepper to a pine wood front door. There are 3 banks, a tobacconist and newsagent, a couple of DIY stores, bakers small supermarkets garage etc. Castril is similar in that you can get everything you need, and there is also a weekly market held here, but on a Friday. You don't need to venture further afield unless you want to. For bigger shops, Baza is the nearest city with an abundance of shops, banks, supermarkets etc. There is a huge market held there each Wednesday.
